Amazon Prime Will Refund Money: What You Need to Know About the Massive Settlement

December 17, 20252 min read

Amazon has reached a historic $2.5 billion settlement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) after allegations that the company used deceptive practices to enroll consumers into Amazon Prime and made it unreasonably difficult to cancel the subscription.

According to the FTC, these practices impacted millions of consumers across the United States over several years. As a result, up to 35 million Amazon Prime members may be eligible to receive a refund.

How the settlement is divided

The $2.5 billion settlement is allocated as follows:

  • $1.5 billion will be distributed as consumer refunds.

  • $1 billion is a civil penalty, described by the FTC as historic.

Who may be eligible

You may qualify for a refund if:

  • You were an Amazon Prime member based in the United States.

  • You enrolled between June 2019 and June 2025.

  • You signed up through an enrollment process challenged by the FTC.

  • You used three or fewer Prime benefits within any 12-month period after enrolling.

Eligible members could receive up to $51, depending on individual circumstances.

How refunds are being issued

Amazon began issuing automatic refunds in November 2025. Payments are being sent via:

  • PayPal

  • Venmo

  • Paper check mailed to the address on file

Digital payments must be claimed within the specified timeframe, and checks must be cashed within the allowed period.

If you do not receive an automatic refund by the end of 2025, a separate claims process will open in 2026, giving eligible consumers another opportunity to request their refund.

Scam warning

The FTC warns consumers to stay alert for scams. Neither the FTC nor Amazon will ask for money, threaten you, or request sensitive personal information related to this settlement.
